PFTP teamed up with Sheffield charity Under The Stars to run a 20-week DJ workshop course at the organisation’s headquarters in Hillsborough back in October last year.
Led by a familiar face behind the decks in both Sheffield and Manchester, Rev. Austin, Under The Stars is a social enterprise that organises music workshops and nights out for people with learning disabilities. The workshops help to increase the confidence of their members as well as reduce social exclusion, building bridges with the local community.
Members were taught how to use DJ equipment and how best to structure a set, as well as skills like setting cue points, using filters, and basic beat-matching. The workshop course culminated in an event at The Night Kitchen on the evening of Wednesday, 5th October, where the participants showcased what they’d learnt in front of fellow Under The Stars members in a relaxed and safe environment. Stepping up to the wheels of steel (well, a Pioneer controller) on the evening were DJs Michael, Ryan, Stevie, Grewster, Nathan, MC Emma, and the Hardstyle Master, who went the extra mile by dressing in his own custom costume. Spanning multiple genres across the course of the evening, they delighted those in attendance with hits from acts ranging from The Smiths and LCD Soundsystem to Jamiroquai and Strike.
